A native of San Antonio, Mr. Guy Sheppard spoke very fondly of his childhood roots in San Antonio and noted that he is happy to now live in Houston. Although this self-taught artist has been painting for only five to seven years, his skill and gift for art truly shines in his works. “I don’t limit myself to just one art medium,” Sheppard said.
His work ranges from portraits to abstracts and use a variety of methods to create his art including graphite pencil, acrylic and oil paints. Sheppard credits his wife for encouraging him to pursue art and spoke of him creating early sketches sitting at the kitchen table. He also draws inspiration from his faith to create his art.
His collection featured a variety of historical portraits including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Buffalo Soldiers and Judith Jamison. His pieces also included African and jazz inspired works. Sheppard’s inspiring story was an example that it is never too late to pursue a dream.
“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”
